For different ways of fishing there are different rods and reels
if you plan on trolling from a boat I recommend a fairly stiff heavy rod that way it doesn’t bend excessively. otherwise a good medium action rod will do fine for casting and retrieving different lures, or live baits

Get yourself a good spinning rod/reel combo. Very multipurpose and has a very nice feel. Get something in the 2000 series that can hold 8-10lb line. Rod should be 6′6 to 7′ in length. Good luck and good fishing
